Also known as Shelby Charter Township, this fast growing bedroom community is located in Macomb County just 15 miles north of downtown Detroit. The US Census Bureau counted the 2020 population as 79,408, up from 65,159 as of 2000. The community was founded in 1827 in an act of the Michigan Territorial Legislature, and it originally included the villages of Utica, Disco, and Sterling Heights. These names remain to the modern day in various street and place names, and the Shelby Township Historical Society maintains exhibits about the “Lost Village of Disco.”
